The Nomad Dragons Cricket Club
A Brief History
The Nomad Dragons Cricket Club was founded in 1999 by four cricketing friends;
James Roberts, John Toscano, Paul Cruz and Alan Lang.
The club is based in Cardiff, South Wales, and because we have no true home as yet, the Nomads appears in our name. We play at three venues; at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, the University of Wales, Llanrumney, also in Cardiff, and Blackweir Park, Cardiff.
In our first two seasons, we have had over 20 playing members and well over 30 social members; friends and family who have supported the venture, and wed like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their invaluable help and support. Without, their help, we would have struggled.
Another person we would like to thank is a sponsor, Marcus Thomas of the sports shop, Sportsflair 2000, Canton, Cardiff. Marcus has supplied the club with cricket shirts for all the playing members and equipment for the team as a whole.
During the season, we play our cricket in the East Wales Cricket Conference. We also play numerous midweek friendlies and cup games, if the weather allows it! Any local team (South-east Wales) interested in a fixture, be it midweek or a Sunday game, please contact us via our email. You will be able to see any gaps in our fixture list on this site.
We had quite a successful season in 2000. We finished third in our league winning 7 games and losing 2. We also reached the quarter-final of the knockout cup competition, eventually playing after many rain cancellations, and were narrowly beaten by the eventual losing finalists.
We had a very eventful tour to Weston-Super-Mare at the beginning of September, though there was no cricket played! In total, nine of the 'founder' members went. Some evening entertainment was sought and easily found, due to Weston's copious drinking holes! Matt Willis won the first ever Dragons Golf Championship, an honour of which I'm sure he's proud! We are planning a second tour to Cambridge, in September of this year.
For our 'End of Season Awards', our first winners of the Batsman of the Year and Bowler of the Year Awards were Lewis Clarke and Steve Davies respectively. Both played fantastically well and deserved recognition for the runs and wickets that they achieved. Well done! Congratulations must also go to those who pushed them all the way. As the years slide inexorably by, more awards will be added!
This site is by no means finished, many pages are still under construction (some photos have been added, with more to come during the summer), and will be updated regularly, with the statistics updated every year and the news when I'm able. We hope that it will be of some (passing) interest to you! Have a look around, at the Player Profiles, Statistics and the other links.
Make sure that you visit the 'News & Cricket Links' page!
Enjoy!
